Natural Park catchment area

The municipalities included in the Serranía de Cuenca Astronomy Park catchment area are: Tragacete, Las Majadas, Cuenca, Uña, Huélamo, Vega del Codorno, Sotorribas (Collados, Pajares, Ribagorda, Ribatajada, Ribatajadilla, Sotos, Torrecilla and Villaseca, Zarzuela), Villalba de la Sierra, Poyatos, Arcos de la Sierra, Portilla, Fuertescusa, Fresneda Sierra, Castillejo-Sierra, Mariana, Beamud and Valdemeca.

The Serranía de Cuenca Astronomy Park is in the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park. This region, in the northeast of the province, has rich environmental value: it is also protected as a Natural Site of National Interest and is part of the Natura 2000 Network. It is home to natural resources of incalculable geological, flora, fauna, and hydrological value. Highlights include:

 

  • The Enchanted City (La Ciudad Encantada) declared a Natural Site of National Interest, and the Alleyways of Las Majadas (Callejones de Las Majadas)
  • El Hosquillo hunting park is an experimental area where conservation of species (such as the bear and the Iberian wolf), research and environmental education are carried out.
  • Source of the Cuervo River Natural Monument
  • Almagrero Creek, also known as Herrería de los Chorros (the Forge of Fountains). Home to one of the very few populations of genetically pure trout.
  • Uña Lagoon
  • Escabas River Valley
  • Source of the Júcar River
  • Devil's Window and the stumps of the Júcar
  • Tobar Lagoon
  • Solán de Cabras
  • Huélamo urban ensemble

The park features a network of trails containing 11 paths suitable for hiking and environmental education. Each path is signposted and has a different level of difficulty. The Natural Park also has recreational areas, viewpoints, and further infrastructures for public use. Further information at areasprotegidas.castillalamancha.es
