Starlight

What is a

STARLIGHT

certification

It means certification from the Starlight Foundation that accredits spaces with excellent sky quality, and that represent an example of protection and conservation. The certification recognises places that include stargazing as part of their natural, scenic, cultural, or scientific heritage and consequently promote “Star Tourism”.

What is a Starlight Tourist Destination?

It is a type of certification for sites that have passed an exhaustive astronomical audit on the quality of the sky and the means to guarantee its protection. In short, sky excellence is determined using the following four parameters:

- Having dark skies hardly affected by light pollution.

- Atmospheric conditions allowing a high degree of sharpness for observing the sky.

- The atmosphere must have adequate transparency.

- A suitable percentage of clear nights during the year.

There is also a further tourism and destination commitment assessment: the municipalities included must prove that they have adequate tourism infrastructures and activities (accommodation, observation facilities available for visitors, training for personnel in charge of interpretation of astronomical spectra, etc.) and show their integration in the nocturnal environment. Therefore, Starlight Tourist Destination certification allows, for the first time, science, and tourism to be combined, creating a new way of travelling based on astronomy and stargazing.
